Hydrodynamic spinodal decomposition: Growth kinetics and scaling functions.

چکیده
We examine the effects of hydrodynamics on the late stage kinetics in spinodal decomposition. From computer simulations of a lattice Boltzmann scheme we observe, for critical quenches, that single phase domains grow asymptotically like t, with α ≈ .66 in two dimensions and α ≈ 1.0 in three dimensions, both in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions.

Hydrodynamic effects on spinodal decomposition kinetics in planar lipid bilayer membranes.
The formation and dynamics of spatially extended compositional domains in multicomponent lipid membranes lie at the heart of many important biological and biophysical phenomena. While the thermodynamic basis for domain formation has been explored extensively in the past, domain growth in the presence of hydrodynamic interactions both within the (effectively) two-dimensional membrane and in the ...
متن کاملMorphological characterization of spinodal decomposition kinetics
The time evolution of the morphology of homogeneous phases during spinodal decomposition is described using a family of morphological measures known as Minkowski functionals. They provide the characteristic length scale L of patterns in a convenient, statistically robust, and computationally inexpensive way. They also allow one to study the scaling behavior of the content, shape, and connectivi...
متن کاملThree-dimensional hydrodynamic lattice-gas simulations of domain growth and self-assembly in binary immiscible and ternary amphiphilic fluids.
We simulate the dynamics of phase assembly in binary immiscible fluids and ternary microemulsions using a three-dimensional hydrodynamic lattice-gas approach. For critical spinodal decomposition we perform the scaling analysis in reduced variables introduced by Jury et al. [Phys. Rev. E 59, R2535 (1999)] and by Bladon et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 579 (1999)]. We find a late-stage scaling expone...
متن کاملSpinodal decomposition in a food colloid-biopolymer mixture: evidence for a linear regime.
We investigate phase separation and structural evolution in a complex food colloid (casein micelles) and biopolymer (xanthan) mixture using small-angle light scattering. We demonstrate that phase separation is induced by a depletion mechanism, and that the resulting coexistence curve can be described by osmotic equilibrium theory for mixtures of colloids and polymer chains in a background solve...
متن کاملSelf-Consistent Model of Polymerization-Induced Phase Separation
We propose an exactly solvable self-consistent kinetic model of polymerization-induced phase separation (PIPS) via spinodal decomposition. Using modified Cahn-Hilliard and Glotzer-Coniglio theories for early and late stages of spinodal decomposition, we find scaling regimes and compare the obtained results with existing experimental and theoretical information on PIPS kinetics, finding a qualit...
